Problems Surrounding Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic is in its third decade with the UNAIDS reporting that the epidemic has levelled in 2009. About 33.3 million people are reported to be living with HIV worldwide, 67.8% million of them in sub-Saharan Africa. 

Studies of HIV positive women of reproductive age form the predominant source of data on HIV-1 prevalence in Lagos State, Nigeria. Identifying factors associated with prevalence of HIV is important in targeting diagnostic services and care. 50 Women participated in the study through the administration of questionnaires with average year of HIV infection of the respondents being between 5 and above. Responses generated from the administration of questionnaires on the issues around PMTCT were analysed by percentage method.
