Abstract

Cucurbita species commonly known as pumpkin and locally called" Elegede" in some part of Southwest Nigeria, is grown for its young leaves and vines and consumed as green vegetables among rural dwellers. In 2015-2016 a preliminary survey of Cucurbita members was carried out to investigate variability, agronomic and economic potentials among the members, that could result in food security and income generation for low scale farmers. Fifteen accessions were collected from various growing areas within Southwest Nigeria viz Ekiti, Ondo, Osun and Oyo States. The result obtained from investigation on agronomic and economic potentials revealed that there are limiting factors to the growing of Cucurbita and these tremendously hinders sustainable production of the species.
